Niger Trigger - Odonus Niger
Niger Triggerfish (Odonus niger)
The Niger Triggerfish, Odonus niger, is a striking Indo-Pacific triggerfish with deep blue, purple or teal body colouration, flowing fin edges and distinctive red teeth that give it the alternative name Red-toothed Triggerfish. Also known as the Blue Triggerfish or Redfang Triggerfish, this active species is one of the more open-water, plankton-feeding triggerfish, often seen in groups on current-swept reef slopes. It can make an impressive centrepiece for a large marine aquarium, but its adult size, strength and predatory potential mean it should be planned for carefully.
Common Name:
Niger Triggerfish, Niger Trigger, Red-toothed Triggerfish, Redtooth Triggerfish, Redfang Triggerfish, Blue Triggerfish, Black-bodied Triggerfish.
Scientific Name (Latin):
Odonus niger
Maximum Size:
Up to around 50 cm in the wild. Aquarium specimens may be smaller, but this species should still be planned for as a large, active triggerfish.
Water Type:
Marine
Origin / Natural Habitat:
Indo-Pacific, from the Red Sea and East Africa across the Indian Ocean and western Pacific to the Line, Marquesas and Society Islands, north to southern Japan and south to northern Australia. Naturally found on current-swept seaward coral reefs, reef channels and outer reef slopes, often forming aggregations where it feeds in the water column.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–27°C
pH Range: 8.1–8.4
Hardness or Salinity: SG 1.020–1.025
Temperament:
Semi-aggressive. Usually less aggressive than many large triggerfish, but it is still a powerful, confident species that can become assertive as it matures. It should be kept with robust tank mates of suitable size and should not be housed with very small, timid or delicate fish.
Diet:
Omnivorous planktivore with predatory tendencies. In the wild, it feeds heavily on zooplankton and also takes sponges and other reef foods. In the aquarium, offer a varied diet of mysis, krill, chopped prawn, clam, mussel, squid, marine fish flesh, quality carnivore pellets and occasional algae-based foods. Include firm or shell-on foods where suitable to help wear the teeth naturally.
Minimum Tank Size:
A minimum of 600 litres is recommended for long-term care, with larger aquariums strongly preferred. This is an active open-water triggerfish that needs swimming space, strong filtration and excellent oxygenation.
Behaviour & Activity:
An energetic, intelligent triggerfish that spends much of its time swimming in open water and patrolling around rockwork. It may wedge itself into caves or crevices using its trigger spine when resting or startled. Juveniles may appear manageable in smaller aquariums, but adults become much larger, stronger and more demanding. Provide secure rockwork, open swimming areas and a covered aquarium.
Reef Safe:
Reef Safe with Caution
Niger Triggerfish are often more coral-safe than many triggerfish and are not usually dedicated coral eaters. However, they may eat or harass ornamental shrimps, crabs, snails, small urchins, worms and other invertebrates, and they may pick at sponges or sessile reef life. Their size, appetite and strength make them risky in delicate reef aquariums.
Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Requires a large aquarium with strong filtration, high oxygen levels and stable water quality. Secure rockwork firmly, as triggerfish can move loose items and wedge into structures. Avoid small ornamental crustaceans and very timid fish. Use caution during maintenance, as larger triggerfish have strong jaws and may bite. This species can spit water and may jump or splash when excited, so a secure lid or covered system is recommended.
Suitable for:
Intermediate fishkeepers
