Torpedo Goby - Ptereleotris evides

Torpedo Goby - Ptereleotris evides

Torpedo Goby (Ptereleotris evides)

The Torpedo Goby, Ptereleotris evides, is a sleek, peaceful marine dartfish with an elongated body, subtle blue to yellow tones and dark-edged fins that give it an elegant, arrow-like appearance. Also known as the Blackfin Dartfish, Scissortail Dartfish or Arrow Goby, this Indo-Pacific species is a graceful open-water hoverer for mature reef aquariums. It is reef safe, social and generally hardy once settled, but it should be kept with peaceful tank mates, plenty of cover and a secure lid because dartfish are easily startled and can jump.

Common Name:
Torpedo Goby, Blackfin Dartfish, Scissortail Dartfish, Arrow Goby, Arrow Dartgoby, Blackfin Goby, Dartfish.

Scientific Name (Latin):
Ptereleotris evides

Maximum Size:
Up to around 14 cm.

Water Type:
Marine

Origin / Natural Habitat:
Indo-Pacific, including the Red Sea, Indian Ocean, Indonesia, Japan, Australia and the central to western Pacific. Naturally found around reef flats, lagoon reefs, outer reef slopes and rubble or sandy areas close to coral structure, often in small groups where they hover above the substrate and retreat quickly into holes or crevices when alarmed.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–27°C
pH Range: 8.1–8.4
Hardness or Salinity: SG 1.020–1.025

Temperament:
Peaceful and timid. Best kept with calm, reef-safe fish that will not bully it or outcompete it at feeding time. It can be kept singly, as a pair or in a group in a suitably sized aquarium, but should not be mixed with aggressive or highly territorial fish.

Diet:
Planktivorous carnivore. In the wild, it feeds on small drifting zooplankton such as copepods, amphipods, crustacean larvae and other tiny water-column prey. In the aquarium, offer frozen mysis, enriched brineshrimp, copepods, cyclops, finely chopped krill, calanus, quality marine micro pellets and small meaty frozen foods. Small regular feeds are best, especially in active reef communities.

Minimum Tank Size:
A minimum of 200 litres is recommended for a single specimen or pair, with larger aquariums preferred for groups. Provide open swimming space as well as secure rockwork, caves and crevices.

Behaviour & Activity:
A graceful hover-and-dart species that spends much of its time suspended in the water column above sand, rubble or rockwork. When startled, it quickly dives into a chosen hole, cave or crevice. It is naturally social and can display well in groups if all specimens are added together and the aquarium is large enough. A tight-fitting lid or mesh cover is essential, as this species is a strong jumper.

Reef Safe:
Reef Safe
Safe with corals and most ornamental invertebrates. It does not nip corals or disturb sessile invertebrates, making it well suited to peaceful reef aquariums. Very tiny planktonic crustaceans may be eaten as part of its natural diet, but it is generally compatible with snails, hermit crabs, cleaner shrimps and typical reef invertebrates.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Requires a secure lid, peaceful tank mates and plenty of hiding places. Avoid aggressive damsels, dottybacks, large hawkfish, predatory wrasses and fast-feeding fish that may intimidate it or prevent feeding. For groups, add all individuals at the same time and provide multiple retreats. A mature aquarium with stable water quality, moderate flow and calm surroundings will help this shy dartfish settle and feed confidently.

Suitable for:
Beginner to intermediate fishkeepers

Availability:
Occasional in trade
