Red Stripe Angel - Centropyge eibli

Red Stripe Angel - Centropyge eibli

Red Stripe Angel (Centropyge eibli)

The Red Stripe Angel is a beautiful dwarf marine angelfish with a pale grey to creamy body, fine orange-red vertical striping, an orange eye ring and a distinctive dark black tail edged with blue. Also known as Eibli’s Angelfish or the Blacktail Angelfish, this species is a hardy and attractive choice for a mature marine aquarium. Like most dwarf angels, it can be kept in reef systems with caution, but it may nip at fleshy corals, soft corals or clam mantles, so it is best suited to experienced reef keepers or fish-only marine setups.

Common Name:
Red Stripe Angel. Also commonly referred to as Eibli’s Angelfish, Eibl’s Dwarf Angel, Orangelined Angelfish or Blacktail Angelfish.

Scientific Name (Latin):
Centropyge eibli

Maximum Size:
Around 15 cm, making it one of the larger dwarf angelfish species.

Water Type:
Marine.

Origin / Natural Habitat:
Found across the eastern Indian Ocean and parts of the Indo-Pacific, including Sri Lanka, the Maldives, the Nicobar Islands, Indonesia and north-western Australia. In the wild it is associated with rocky reef areas, coral-rich zones, lagoons, reef slopes and channels, where it grazes across rockwork and reef surfaces.

Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–27°C
pH Range: 8.1–8.4
Salinity: 1.020–1.025 SG

Temperament:
Semi-aggressive. It is generally manageable in a suitable marine community, but it can become territorial once established, especially towards other dwarf angels, similar-shaped fish or newly introduced tank mates.

Diet:
Omnivorous grazer. It should be offered a varied diet including marine algae, spirulina-based foods, quality marine pellets, angelfish preparations, frozen mysis, brineshrimp, finely chopped krill, mussel, cockle and other small marine foods. Regular feeding and access to mature live rock for grazing can help reduce the chance of coral-nipping behaviour.

Minimum Tank Size:
A practical recommendation is at least 250–300 litres for a single adult, with larger aquariums preferred in mixed reef communities or if keeping with other semi-aggressive marine fish.

Behaviour & Activity:
This is an active dwarf angelfish that spends much of the day swimming around rockwork, grazing on surfaces and moving between caves, ledges and open areas. In the wild it may form small harems, but in most aquariums it is safest kept singly unless the system is very large and the keeper is experienced.

Reef Safe:
Reef Safe with Caution
This species is not guaranteed reef safe. Many individuals behave well in reef aquariums, but some may nip at LPS corals, soft corals, zoanthids, clam mantles or other sessile invertebrates. Risk varies between individuals, feeding routine and aquarium maturity.

Special Requirements or Care Notes:
Best kept in a mature marine aquarium with stable water quality, good oxygenation, live rock and plenty of hiding places. A well-fed specimen in a mature system is usually easier to manage, but coral compatibility should always be monitored. Avoid mixing with other dwarf angels in smaller aquariums, as aggression can occur. It may hybridise naturally with related dwarf angelfish in some parts of its range, which is why colour and pattern variation may sometimes appear in the trade.

Suitable for:
Intermediate marine fishkeepers

Availability:
Occasional in trade
